Pike County will likely be home to a new power plant developed by Tenaska, an internationally recognized energy company headquartered in Omaha, Nebraska. The company is considering building a plant with a capacity of up to 1,800 megawatts (MW), which could provide enough electricity for 1,800,000 residences.

Construction costs would exceed $200 million. Approximately 300 construction workers would be employed each month during the two-year construction period. The plant would provide at least 25 well-paying jobs, and would have an annual payroll of at least $2 million, including payments to subcontractors.

This and other merchant plants would allow Indiana ratepayers to enjoy the benefits of competition in the wholesale market and ensure that the state has a reliable and affordable supply of electricity to meet the state’s growing need.

Tenaska has focused on a potential site in Pike County because of its proximity to existing electric transmission lines and natural gas pipelines.

The company appreciates the support it has received from the Pike County Growth Council and the local community.

“Paul Lake and the Pike County Growth Council have been outstanding to work with,” said Jana Martin, Tenaska’s director of public and government affairs. “We really appreciate the support of all the elected officials representing Pike County, the Chamber of Commerce and other county organizations, like Farm Bureau, who have been very supportive. Community support is key when developing a project like this.”

If constructed, the electric generating plant will be fueled by natural gas, the cleanest burning fossil fuel. Using state-of-the-art control technology, it will operate well within all local, state and federal environmental guidelines and requirements.
