Indiana will be the site of a new facility which is being watched by the entire commercial roofing industry. GAF recently broke ground for its state of the art thermoplastic polyolefin (TPO) facility in Mt. Vernon, Indiana.
GAFs planned 65,000 square foot facility represents a $28 million investment in Posey County. The new plant will be located adjacent to the companys existing facility.
Nancy Burns of the Mt. Vernon Chamber of Commerce said that GAF currently employees 160 people. She said the new plant will initially employ 35 people. It is projected that 50 to 55 people will be employed at the plant within the first three years.
Tom Ruchalski, commercial controller for GAF said, We are very excited about expanding in Posey County, simply because the work force that we already have experience with is excellent and we see a very easy start-up as a result of that dedication
So strongly does GAF believe in Posey County, that it announced earlier that it will provide $150,000 for needed infrastructure improvements to assist the county in obtaining a state matching funds grant.
Key executives of GAF offered their thanks to officials of Mt. Vernon and Posey County for their support and cooperation at the event. Mt. Vernon has been the site of GAFs current plant for over 25 years. The decision to build the new high tech plant in Mt.Vernon was based largely on the companys appreciation of the people of Mt. Vernon. GAF executives cited the populace as having proven to be reliable, open-minded employees with an exceptional work ethic.
GAFs current facility produces residential shingles as well as some commercial goods. Ruchalski said that the new facility will produce thermal plastic membrane for commercial roofing applications. He also stated that the facility will be a national distribution point for the company.
Completion of the plant is scheduled for the end of 2000. It will be staffed with personnel trained to work with advanced equipment calibrated to manufacture 10 foot wide TPO in black and white.
