Indiana Congressman Hostettler addresses the crowd at Cranes Open House
From its humble beginnings in the early 40s with a focus on naval ordnance, Crane Naval Surface Warfare Division in Southwest Indiana has grown to a dynamic, fast-paced technology center.
During its recent 60th anniversary celebration and open house, emphasis was placed on Cranes strong sense of community and strides to serve the public.
With an annual budget of $728 million, Crane is the areas second largest employer. Crane covers 100 square miles of woodland and is a strong leader in protecting the environment and the preservation of natural resources. Its beautifully maintained 800 acre lake, camping areas and golf course are open for the public to enjoy.
Crane has a broad customer base including the Navy, Marine Corps, Air Force, Army, Coast Guard, NASA, SOCOM and other military and civilian organizations. It also has plans of broadening that base while assisting area communities in their economic growth.
Crane has evolved from its ordinance roots (20% of Department of Defense ordnance is stored at Crane) into a high-tech and Fleet Support organization. Crane employs 1,926 engineers, technicians and scientists.
Crane freely shares its brain trust with area businesses. It operates a technology transfer program making these scientists, engineers and technicians available to area businesses while providing access to its test, evaluation and prototype facilities. In addition, Crane has a School Partnership Program to assist Southwest Indiana schools (40 now participating) with math and science education. Assistance includes tutoring, career counseling, in class presentations and job shadowing.
